This premier event focuses on primitive technology. The Winter Count gathering has a varitety of workshops that will be familiar and will also introduce you to many new and different formats, skills and personalities. Experienced instructors, with diverse primitive skills, will teach you how to brain tan deer hide, create pottery, learn fire-by-friction methods, ply cordage and many other utilitarian skills.

STORIES OF THE PAST: STONE TOOLS
Travel back in time and follow the progression of tool making through the story of stone. How were stone tools made? Learn about the rock cycle, flintknapping and grinding techniques to shape rocks. Examine prehistoric replicas of Stone Age technology.

FLINT-KNAPPING: THE ART OF MAKING ARROWHEADS AND STONE TOOLS
In this introductory class you will participate in a 2.5-million-year-old tradition of making tools from stone . . . . our most ancient technology! Beginners will learn about the different types of stone used to make tools, and will receive a basic knapping kit to learn and take home. Stone to work on (obsidian) will also be provided. Bring along eye protection and leather gloves, if you have them.

THE FIBER ARTS OF CORDAGE MAKING
The ability to twist, twine or braid fiber into cordage allowed indigenous cultures to tie their world together. Learn the various techniques of gathering, preparation, extracting and plying of different plant materials to create cordage. Practice the efficient method of leg rolling dogbane fibers. The skill to ply plant fibers into cordage led to the creation of woven cloth and the textile arts. We'll make a small looped string bag using our newly made cordage as the beginning foundation for the bag. Due to the limited amount of time, we'll continue and finish the bag using commercial cotton cordage that has been colored with natural plant dyes. The looped string bag will look similar to the bag in the photo below.

WILD EDIBLES AND PLANT USES HIKE
The Ohlone Peoples and European settlers gathered wild plants for food, medicine and tools. Identify edible plants on a springtime hike. Gather Miner’s lettuce for a tasty salad, process Manzanita cider, try Stinging nettle soup, snack on Pine nuts and sample other savory wild foods.

SEDGE & RUSH BASKET
Baskets are found all over the world in various cultures. They serve utilitarian uses, such as gathering, transporting and storage, as well as aesthetic purposes. Experience the ability to create a basket from sedge and rush plants. You'll learn three different twining techniques that were found in native baskets of the Central Valley of California. Harvesting, processing and preparation methods will be discussed. Come and enjoy a day of making a twined basket out of plants from the marsh.

OHLONE VILLAGE SITE TOUR
Meet at the Visitor Center and visit the Ohlone exhibits and displays. Then, we'll walk 1/4 of a mile through vibrant marsh habitat to a 2,200-year-old Ohlone village site. Along the trail, we’ll identify plants that provided food, medicine and tools for the Ohlone Peoples. Tour reconstructed structures, like a tule house, shade shelter, sweat house and a circular subterranean house. You'll also get the opportunity to examine reproductions of artifacts of the first people of the San Francisco Bay Area.

BUCKEYE GATHERING: BELTAINE
Ancestral Arts & Primitive Living Skills
The gathering is an educational event that will consist of teachers hosting classes ongoing for five days, on a variety of topics including: hand-drill fire making, plant fiber cordage, stone tools, buckskin, basket weaving, nature awareness, pottery, local flora and fauna identification, food preparation (acorns!), primitive weapons including bows and arrows, fiber arts, herbalism, shelter building, and storytelling. We are excited to have local Native American involvement in both the planning process and the event itself. We will encourage a family-oriented, all-ages event and will emphasize skills and materials indigenous to California, while welcoming students and instructors from all over the map. There will be activities interspersed throughout the week such as a marketplace, panel discussion, and dance night. We will provide breakfast and dinner. Participant camping will consist of cars, tents, tipis, and trailers.

SKILLS OF THE PAST: SHELL PENDANT & BEADS
Plants and shells were made into indigenous necklaces for adornment. Utilize past technology to break, drill and grind shell pieces by hand to make shell beads. We'll also create pine nut beads and an abalone shell pendant. Use a pump drill to produce the pendant hole. Watch a demonstration on twining dogbane cordage. Learn about stone tools and prehistoric techniques. Using paleolithic skills, we'll make a very unique necklace.
Shell beads provided anthropologists with knowledge of trade and exchange networks, the distribution of wealth and status in central California Native societies.

WEAVING THE WETLAND
Come and join us as we learn about the ecological relationship of the plants in the Sedge family (Cyperaceae) and the Cattail family (Typhaceae). We'll thread our way through the marsh and discover the various cultural uses of these wetland flora. Create a small, decorative sedge container that can be given as a holiday gift.

OHLONE VILLAGE SITE TOUR
Learn about Ohlone cultures as we tour a diorama of village life at the Visitor Center. Walk to a 2,200-year-old Tuibun Ohlone village site in the park, see replicated structures and examine reproductions of artifacts. Along the trail, we’ll identify plants that provided food, medicine and tools for the first people of the San Francisco Bay Area.

WILLOW PRUNING & GATHERING
Find out about Ohlone land management techniques to tend nature, then apply those methods to increase the health, extent and habitat potential of a lakeside willow patch. Help us prune and gather willow for use in next year's cultural programs at Coyote Hills Regional Park.

What to Bring: If you have your own lopper or pruning shear, bring it. Also, gloves would be useful. Having a bucket to place your gathered willow withes into will make harvesting more efficient.
I will have a limited number of pruning saws, loppers and pruning shears to share.
